IPC Maintenance successfully completed the scaffolding, painting, and refurbishment of 10 x 11,000-ton cells plus 2 galleries, NC6 and AC2. To address environmental concerns due to the project's proximity to the ocean, IPC chose to use ice blasting for cell preparation. This method was both cost-effective and helped eliminate the costly cleanup of garnet, as well as reduced the risk of garnet blowing into the ocean.
Each cell required over 100 tons of scaffolding equipment, which had to be encapsulated to contain any debris or overspray during the painting process. For the galleries, a hanging scaffold was engineered to create a working deck underneath, providing access to areas that needed refurbishment.
The project was further complicated by the global COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly impacted day-to-day operations. Despite challenges related to labor shortages and the harsh winters commonly experienced in Esperance, IPC completed the project within the requested timeframe set by CBH and its stakeholders.
